I had a reference assignment due tonight, where I was supposed to find one article on a topic online, and an article on the same topic found using a paper index. Since I was in Savannah for the holiday weekend, I waited until today to do this assignment. Finding the online article was pretty easy, but I discovered I didn’t know where to start with the online index. (Yes, it’s been a long, long time since my undergrad years!) I asked reference librarians at a public library and at an academic library (not the one where I work), and they totally steered me clear of paper indexes. In class tonight, we had an interesting discussion about this issue, since a few classmates were able to use a paper index, but most of the class had problems too. Print vs e-resources, such a meaty issue! It affects my daily work behind the scenes, so it was interesting to deal with it from the patron end today.
Weekend update: Savannah was beautiful as usual! I love the history there! I was there for a wedding, so it was a busy weekend, but I managed to take a few photos. I’m still working on the individual descriptions and such on Flickr. It’s good practice for my digital librarian classses, though, right?!
